A one-hour talk presented by Dr. Michael Wallach
In 1901, commercial sponge divers discovered the wreck of a Roman merchant ship off the coast of the Greek island of Antikythera. Among the hundreds of items recovered were fragments of what appeared to be some kind of mechanical device. The 82 fragments of hwat is now called the Antikythera Mechanism found their way to the National Archaeological Museum of Athens. It remained essentially unstudied until 1974. It was not until high tech studies were conducted in 2008 that its purpose and function were finally understood. This talk will discuss the amazing 2100-year old machine, including the most recent study that finally deciphered the extensive inscriptions on the world's first analog computer.
