Bob Fosse’s exquisite 1972 film Cabaret visualized the “divine decadence” of 1931 Germany through the not-so-innocent eyes of Berlin nightclub performer Sally Bowles (Oscar®-winning Liza Minnelli). In this multimedia lecture, cultural historian Max Alvarez will examine the origins of the original John Kander-Fred Ebb Broadway musical and the novel, play, films — and the genuine 1920s Berlin cabaret scene — which inspired it.
